Rishyap and Lava: Cloud Forests and Kanchenjunga Dawn Views
A guide to Rishyap and Lava — sunrise views, Neora Valley forest trails, and the North Bengal hills circuit.
Rishyap and Lava sit within 10 km of each other at over 7,000 feet in the Darjeeling hills, both wrapped in clouds and pine forest for much of the year. They offer the kind of Himalayan escape where the mountain reveals itself slowly.
Rishyap — Above the Clouds
Rishyap is a tiny hamlet perched just above Lava with arguably the finest unobstructed Kanchenjunga sunrise views in the region. On clear mornings, the entire Kanchenjunga massif including Jannu, Kabru, and Rathong glows pink and gold before the sun reaches the valley below.
Lava — Forest Gateway
Lava is the base town for Neora Valley National Park, one of the richest biodiversity zones in the eastern Himalayas. The pine and oak forests around town are themselves excellent for birdwatching and gentle walks.
The Circuit
A Rishyap–Lava–Lolegaon–Kolakham circuit makes one of the best 4-night offbeat Himalayan itineraries, entirely on small roads through forested hills.
Getting There
Both are around 4.5 hours from NJP via Kalimpong. Day trips between Rishyap and Lava are easy — the short forest walk between them is recommended.
