Mangwa and Sitong: Darjeeling's Organic Hill Villages
A guide to Mangwa and Sitong — orange orchards, Teesta views, and organic hill village life near Darjeeling.
The hills around Darjeeling are dotted with small villages that most tourists drive past on their way to the viewpoints. Mangwa and Sitong are two such places that reward those who stop — offering a genuine slice of mountain village life surrounded by orchards and forest.
Mangwa — The Twin Villages
Chota Mangwa and Bara Mangwa are barely 2 km apart, set in a landscape of orange orchards, pine forest, and Teesta river views. The absence of commercialisation is Mangwa's greatest asset. The Kanchenjunga backdrop from the orchard trails here is exceptional.
Sitong — The Orange Village
Sitong is known locally as the "Orange Village" for its prolific orchards. The Teesta and Rangit rivers are both visible from the village ridgeline. Cardamom farming is another local livelihood — the forest floor around Sitong is carpeted with cardamom plants.
A Perfect Slow Travel Circuit
Mangwa and Sitong combine naturally with Tinchuley and Charkhole for a 3–4 night slow travel loop through North Bengal's lesser-known hill villages.
Getting There
Both villages are 3–4 hours from NJP via Siliguri and Bagdogra. Homestays are the primary accommodation option.
