Kolakham and Neora Valley: North Bengal's Wild Forest Retreat
A guide to Kolakham and Neora Valley — forest treks, rare birds, and red panda territory in North Bengal.
Kolakham is the kind of destination that feels undiscovered even after you've found it. The small forest village sits at 6,500 feet surrounded by oak, rhododendron, and bamboo forest — and looks out over the Neora Valley, one of the most biodiverse zones in the eastern Himalayas.
The Forest and Wildlife
Neora Valley National Park is home to the red panda, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, and over 300 species of birds. The golden eagle and lammergeier are regularly spotted from the ridgetops. The Rufous-necked Hornbill — one of India's rarest birds — nests in the valley.
Trekking from Kolakham
The trails through the Neora forest lead to ridgetop viewpoints with panoramic Kanchenjunga views. The Change Waterfall trail is the most popular half-day trek from the village.
Lava Connection
Lava, 14 km away, is the nearest town with more accommodation options and the gateway to the Neora Valley park headquarters. A Kolakham–Lava–Lolegaon circuit makes an excellent 3-night North Bengal itinerary.
Getting There
Kolakham is about 5 hours from NJP via Kalimpong or Lava. The final stretch is on a narrow forest road — private vehicles or jeeps recommended.
