Reshikhola: A Riverside Escape on the Kalimpong Silk Route
A guide to Reshikhola — Reshi River walks, forest trails, and the lower Silk Route in the Kalimpong hills.
Reshikhola is not on most maps and that is precisely its appeal. This small valley on the Reshi River at just 2,000 feet sits at the meeting point of the Darjeeling hills and the Silk Route corridor — warm, green, and unhurried.
The River Life
The Reshi is a clean, fast-moving Himalayan river and Reshikhola's most important asset. Guests wade the shallow crossings, fish for mahseer in the deeper pools, and sit on the banks watching the current run down from the higher hills. The sound of the river at night is the village's natural soundtrack.
The Forest Surroundings
The hills above Reshikhola are covered in dense forest. The trails into the trees are short but rich with birds, butterflies, and the occasional glimpse of a Himalayan barbet or hornbill.
The Silk Route Connection
Reshikhola lies on the lower Silk Route corridor — from here, the road climbs toward Lingtam, Zuluk, and the high passes of the East Sikkim frontier. Many Silk Route tour packages use Reshikhola as a warm-weather overnight base before ascending to the colder altitudes.
Getting There
Reshikhola is about 4 hours from NJP via Kalimpong. The road to the valley is narrow — shared jeeps from Rhenock or Rongli are the standard transport.
