Mankhim and the Silk Route Viewpoints of East Sikkim
A guide to Mankhim hilltop, Lampokhri Lake, Sillerygaon, and the East Sikkim Silk Route gateway.
East Sikkim's greatest charm lies in its elevation — ridgelines that look down on Bhutan and Tibet, and a trail of ancient trading posts that once carried silk between China and India.
Mankhim — The Temple on the Hill
Mankhim sits atop a forested hill in Dalapchand village near Aritar. From here, the Lampokhri Lake below looks like a footprint carved in emerald — one of the most distinctive aerial views in Sikkim. On a clear day, Kanchenjunga, Jelep La pass, and the rooftops of Zuluk are all visible.
The Lampokhri Lake Circuit
From Mankhim, the trail descends to Lampokhri Lake — the oldest lake in Sikkim and the highest boating lake in the state. The surrounding forest contains the Aritar Monastery with ancient Buddhist murals and manuscripts.
Sillerygaon Connection
Sillerygaon, a peaceful village on the Kalimpong–Sikkim border, combines well with the Mankhim–Aritar circuit. Its ridgetop position gives an unbroken view from Bhutan to Kanchenjunga.
Silk Route Gateway
From Aritar and Mankhim, the Silk Route circuit toward Zuluk and Gnathang Valley is just a short drive — making this area a natural starting point for the full Silk Route experience.
