West Sikkim: Pelling, Ravangla, and the Hidden Villages
A journey through West Sikkim covering Pelling, Ravangla, Uttarey, and Rinchenpong.
West Sikkim is the quieter, more contemplative side of the state. While Gangtok draws the crowds, West Sikkim rewards those who seek solitude with some of the finest Himalayan scenery in India.
Pelling — Kanchenjunga Up Close
Perched at 7,200 feet, Pelling offers some of the clearest views of Kanchenjunga. The Pemayangste Monastery, one of the oldest in Sikkim, and the Khechipelri Lake — considered a wish-fulfilling lake by Buddhists — are the main draws.
Ravangla — Buddha and Bird Song
Ravangla is known for the giant Buddha Park and the surrounding forest trails where rare Himalayan birds nest. The Temi Tea Garden nearby is Sikkim's only tea estate.
Uttarey and Rinchenpong — Off the Map
Uttarey, deep in the Singalila forests, is the trailhead for the Goecha La trek. Rinchenpong is a peaceful perch with unobstructed snow peak views — ideal for a quiet honeymoon or retreat.
Travel Tips
October to December and March to May offer the clearest skies. Permits are required for some western areas — arrange these in Gangtok or Pelling.
