Tawang: India's Highest Monastery Town
A guide to Tawang monastery, Sela Pass, and Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh.
Tawang is a journey as much as a destination. The road from Guwahati climbs through Bomdila, past the Dirang valley, and over the 4,176-metre Sela Pass before descending into the misty Tawang bowl — a natural amphitheatre ringed by mountains.
The Tawang Monastery
Founded in 1680, the Tawang Gompa is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. The six-storey library houses over 400 ancient manuscripts and a 28-foot golden Buddha.
Sela Pass and the War Memorial
Sela Pass at 13,700 feet is one of the highest altitude passes in the world. The Jaswant Garh War Memorial nearby honours the bravery of Indian soldiers from the 1962 conflict with China.
Dirang Valley
Dirang is a warm, fertile valley between Bomdila and Tawang — a welcome contrast to the high passes. The hot springs, kiwi orchards, and ancient Dirang Dzong fort make it a worthy stop.
Best Time and Permits
April to June and September to November are ideal. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit — both obtainable online.
